Memories That Froze In Time

Former site of Min Xin Primary School

Former site of Min Xin Primary School

I am writing here to express my deep sadness and concern regarding the recent demolition of Min Xin Primary School.

The school, which has served the boys and girls of Bedok North, holds a treasure trove of memories for those of us who were fortunate enough to be part of its community from 1982 to 2003.

The news of the school's merger with Yu Neng Primary School in 2003 was met with profound sadness among the alumni, as it signified the end of a rich history that has shaped the lives of many. The corridors of Min Xin Primary School echoed with the laughter, camaraderie, and shared experiences of generations of students.

This week, the government announced that the site of the former Min Xin Primary School will be converted to a BTO build site; comprising 430 units of 4 Room, 5 Room, and 2R Flexi.

The fact that the old school building was fully demolished in mid 2023 makes me sad. Now, BTO are being constructed on its site.

Perhaps in future, we can tell our kids and grandkids that this apartment building plot used to be our school.

Feels like it was just yesterday that I was playing marbles, leaping hopscotch, and having fun in the rear parking lot while waiting for my father or maternal grandfather to pick me up from school.

I understand the necessity of changes and progress, but I hope the government could consider preserving the name of Min Xin elsewhere. The school's name carries not just its historical significance but also the collective memories and achievements of its students and staff over the years.

Retaining the name in another context or space would not only honor the legacy of Min Xin Primary School but also provide a tangible link to the past for future generations. It would serve as a reminder of the school's contributions to the community and the education it provided to countless boys and girls throughout its existence.

I believe that by considering this request, the government can demonstrate a commitment to preserving the cultural and educational heritage of our community.
